Face it - you are all in.
Into what? Our digital culture of course. You are all in because you really don't have an alternative.
First, our lifestyle is incredible and most would argue we are better off because of it.... you just know there is a 'but' coming don't you?
Because you are all in, you have given up control over the money you will spend to be a part of this culture.
Have you thought about this?
I'll use myself as an example. Shannon and I are iPhone users. AWESOME devices! By being an iPhone user (and I'm VERY conservative with my electronics) I agree that every 4-5 years, I will be buying a new phone. (PLEASE tell me how to avoid this if you can - software obsolescence has driven me to take perfectly good phones out of service! ) Plans which hide the cost of the device aside, that means that roughly $600 per device x 2 = $1200 over 4 years = about $300 per year.
Not bad right?
What do you store on these devices? Your data of course; your images, your files, games, what have you. How much to store it? (You DO use some kind of cloud right?) Lets say its maybe $2 a month today. (Your data is growing exponentially by the way...) We are at $324 per year.
I'm going to stop at the phones to make this simple and pretend you don't have many other devices that work the same way!
How long do you plan on wanting to enjoy your images? Well the rest of your life of course!
Lets say that means for at least another 30 years, so $324 x 30 = $9720.
For $9720 I get to:
View My Own Images
If at any point I stop paying in, I do not get to enjoy or even have possession of my own images!
For me, I'm all in right now, but I have a healthy amount of time to continue to work to pay this bill. I don't know about you, but at the time I will most enjoy these images of my family years from now, I'm planning to have prints so I don't have to use my retirement money just to enjoy what is already mine.
