Shannon and I are grandparents as we have mentioned many times, so we have a real connection to creating portraits with grandchildren.
Time with our own grandchildren in person is very limited and incredibly joyful when we actually are able to be with them. This limitation makes the time even more precious. It also makes us think how different being a grandparent is from being a parent.
Sometimes it feels like being a grandparent is almost like a 'do over' of parenthood. It's not of course, but it truly feels very different. Sometimes it comes out in spoiling your grandchildren, (when their mom isn't watching!), but sometimes it has led to some pretty special moments; moments where you share parenting experiences with your own child, about your own child.
A conversation like that, when you think about it, is a lot like passing the baton on to the next runner, taking your family into the future.
When I was photographing these sessions, I was looking for those special moments and glances and gestures between grandparent and grandchild that would immediately be remembered and recognized by both and tried to depict just how beautiful they are.... They deserve to have that memory forever.
We hope you enjoy the images,
Hayward and Shannon
